“That’s entertainment!” (not…)

tv-1844964_1920Just bought a Roku at the beginning of summer.  You need to understand that such a plunge into entertainment technology is a significant step for this retiree.  I grew up with four or five channels on a TV of which you had to walk across the room and manually turn a knob to “surf”.

Bob is well please with the sports coverage, as well as the savings from “cutting the cable”.  Being a big movie buff, he’s also enjoying the multiple choices and genres in those offerings as well.  Which means, as he is well aware, that for us to watch a movie together, it has be what he now calls “a Dawn movie”.  Basically, that means it must have a puppies and butterflies ending.

Don’t give me angst and call it entertainment—I have enough of that in real life.

Evidently, so did King David.  In this one song alone, here are several problem bullet points:

  • Emotional distress and tears
  • Body and soul wasting away
  • Strength-draining sin
  • Despised by friends and enemies alike
  • Ignored as is if dead
  • Rumors
  • Life-threatening conspiracies against him

This is more than a bad-hair day.  And now for the big “but”…

But I am trusting you, O LORD, saying, “You are my God!”

I love that in the midst of such anguish and terrible circumstances, David declares that he is trusting (present tense) in the Lord, in His faithfulness and ability to be God in this situation.  And David had many, situations that is.

So what about me?  I can bring my shopping list of concerns to God?  He’s okay with that, but what’s the upshot?

It is that, in the midst of them all, I can trust Him entirely.  His timing, His wisdom, power and goodness.  And over all of that, His ever-abiding presence.

Which is even better than puppies and butterflies.

Tends toward TMI, so here's the short list: guitar and banjo (both of which have been much neglected as of late), bicycling (ibid), dogs, very black tea, and contemplating and commenting on deep philosophical thoughts about which I have had no academic or professional training. Oh, also reading, writing, but I shy away from arithmetic.

  1. You sent me to google a Roku. That’s my normal speed with technology. No cable, huh. Can you get Fox News? Uck-oo. I’ve just taken a public stand to admit I’m a Fox watcher! 😀 I do agree that comfort in Jesus is even better than puppies and butterflies.

  2. In the midst of every test and trial we can find God’s mercy if we look for it. Too often our eyes are on the problems and difficulties. David was able to see God in the middle of his struggles. Mercy is always there.
