AND, he cleans bathrooms…!!

IMG_20150103_172451138

It’s kinda hard to argue with your husband when he’s cleaning the bathroom because, well…HE’S CLEANING THE BATHROOM!!  Granted, for you younger women who implemented the non-traditional delegation of labor from day one of the honeymoon, this may not seem like a big deal.  But for those of us who grew up during the revered years of the reigning queen of domesticity (“June Cleaver”), just trust me…it’s a big deal.

To score Bob a few more points in the annuls of wifedom, his comment to me several years ago was, “It’s my goal in life for you to never clean another bathroom.”

And after my subsequent recovery…

(Just kidding.)

But he wasn’t, and I should be so worthy of such lofty goals!?!  So, our little tête-à-tête had to do with an ingredient I had been using in some of my cooking which, which, when he found out (while he was cleaning the bathroom), caused him not a little concern.

You see, my husband’s genetics necessitate some special precautions for his cardiac health.  Thankfully, he’s about as robust as they come in his 60’s, but some of the men in his direct family line were not, emphasis on “were”.  And also thankfully, he takes these precautions seriously.  So do I, but as more research becomes available, it seems that our food choices can also progress.

You know, things like improved taste?

Okay, fine.  He cleans the bathrooms, I’ll do the best with what I’m “allowed” to use.  Really, it’s not a bad trade-off.

It all kind of sounds like conversations we (the Bride) tend to have with God (our Heavenly Husband) sometimes.  We want to relegate Him to cleaning up our messes while we choose to put whatever we think sounds good into our bodies.

Because it feels good.

Because other people are doing it and they seem okay.

Because culture changes and new ideas have surfaced.

Because it improves the “taste” of life.

Obviously, we’re not the only ones finding ourselves in this state of so-called modernity:

This is what the Lord says:
“Stop at the crossroads and look around.
Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it.
Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls.
But you reply, ‘No, that’s not the road we want!’

Of course, as it’s been rightly and wisely said, God’s methods may change, but His message does not.  Bob doesn’t care how I cook the food; he’s just concerned about what I put in the food.

And when it comes to my Heavenly Husband, this part of the Bride will choose to be satisfied with the Divine Trade-off.  It’s W-A-A-Y in my favor.

Tends toward TMI, so here's the short list: guitar and banjo (both of which have been much neglected as of late), bicycling (ibid), dogs, very black tea, and contemplating and commenting on deep philosophical thoughts about which I have had no academic or professional training. Oh, also reading, writing, but I shy away from arithmetic.

  1. 29 years ago, my now wife said, before the “I do,” that she did not clean bathrooms. I told her, “no problem,” and have been cleaning them ever since. On the other side, she washes clothes and I fold them. She cleans the kitchen and I vacuum. She mows the grass and I fix the lawn mower after she runs over something.

Oh, and as for the post, another great analogy.
