I never saw Saving Private Ryan; don’t want to either, but I heard that the real heroes who were there gave that first twenty minutes their blessing as being pretty eye-popping accurate.   Maybe it was just in some other old movie I saw years ago, but a quote stuck in my head.  The scene was inside one of those small, flat-bottomed landing craft as it rapidly approached the beach at the invasion of Normandy in World War II.  To the anxious American soldiers, the commander in charge said, “Men, as soon as you step on that beach, you are a veteran.” 

Despite the popularity of GI Joe and similar movies, games, and consumer junk, there is absolutely nothing nice about war.  Nothing.  But war is part of human existence.   I reiterate what John Eldredge so aptly talks about in his book, Waking the Dead, that the backdrop of all life is, in fact, war.  It’s not what we were originally created for, but it is what it is, and now we are responsible for dealing with it.

Interestingly, the pattern of war started even before the human race came on the scene when Satan gathered his army and mounted his unsuccessful coup (what was he thinking???)  He was, unfortunately, successful in sucking us into his plan, which set up a chain reaction throughout the millennia. 

So, here we are.

Which brings me to a very specific point.  For a Christian, even when we’re at peace (in our temporal realities) we are still at war (in the spiritual realities).  Thus the desperate need to not only recruit good soldiers, but also the veterans to train them.  And just like the armed forces of today, our methods of training need to keep pace with what’s available for those newcomers.

Are you a Christian veteran?  I mean in God’s army.  Please don’t hide your scars from us younger ones.  We need to understand your pain, recognize your expertise, and learn from your experience and practical strategies in all things “pertaining to life and godliness”.  We need the wisdom of both your warnings and encouragements.

Are you relevant?  Totally.  Are you needed?  More than ever.  Are you available? I hope so.

There are questions that need to be answered, fears that need to be stilled, lies that need to be exposed, lives that need to be rescued and restored.  If God created the Universe with His words, then YOUR words must have power to create, heal, redirect. 

There are still workers needed to bring in the harvest.

There are still mountains that need to be moved by speaking to them. 

There is still a war going on, and Jesus wants YOU.
